From Silence to Leadership: How Shiv Kumari Became the Architect of Her Community’s Progress

For years, Shiv Kumari lived a life divided by a secret. Residing in the slum of Kalyanpuri, Delhi, with her husband—a daily wage laborer—and their three daughters, she was an active, deeply caring neighbor. She regularly organized community meetings and walked sick neighbors to local clinics. Yet, behind her confident community spirit lay a hidden burden: Shiv Kumari had never gone to school. The catalyst for Shiv Kumari’s new chapter came during a Discipleship Centre community exposure visit to Rajasthan. There, she witnessed firsthand the incredible, transformative power of rural women running their own Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

Inspired but hesitant, she worried that she was “too old” to start from scratch. Suppressing her fears, she finally voiced her request for DC’s Adult literacy project field staff. With their steady encouragement, Shiv Kumari began a rigorous journey of practice. The woman who once feared it was too late quickly mastered signing her name, eventually learning to read and write Hindi fluently.

From Student to Entrepreneur and Leader

Once literacy unlocked her confidence, Shiv Kumari’s trajectory was unstoppable. She shifted seamlessly from learner to leader:

• Community Advocate: During local entitlement camps, she stood side-by-side with project staff, physically helping her neighbors fill out official documentation for Voter IDs, Ration cards, and civic applications.
• Organizing Leader: Recognizing her natural authority and dedication, she was appointed Vice President of the Community Based Organization (CBO) group, “Asha Ki Kiran” (Ray of Hope).
• Micro-Entrepreneur: Wanting to secure financial independence for her family, Shiv Kumari utilized her SHG network to buy a redi (mobile vending cart). Today, every single evening, she operates a successful vegetable vending business, bringing in a reliable, steady income that has eased her household’s financial strain.

A Legacy of True Independence

Though the initial development project that sparked her journey has concluded, Shiv Kumari’s impact has only grown.

Today, she is completely self-reliant, highly confident, and independently manages a local Self-Help Group, guiding other marginalized women toward financial and social stability. Her husband and daughters look upon her with immense pride, seeing her not just as a homemaker, but as a businesswoman and a vocal champion for adult education.
