From a Kalyanpuri Slum to Federal Bank General Manager: How Hope and Higher Education Changed Ajay’s Life
Growing up in the Kalyanpuri slum of Delhi, Ajay Kumar faced an uphill battle. With an environment fraught with daily challenges and a home life strained by his father’s alcoholism, the path forward seemed uncertain. Yet, amidst the hardship, one constant remained: his mother’s unwavering belief in the power of education. She was determined to see her son build a brighter, better future.
The turning point came in the 6th grade. Unable to afford private tuition, Ajay found a lifeline in the Discipleship Centre (DC) Child and Adolescent Resource Centre. What began as a space for free academic support in English, Mathematics, and Science quickly evolved into a second home.
By the time he reached 10th grade, attending a DC summer camp ignited a profound spark within him. He realized he wanted to rise above his circumstances, fulfill his potential, and support the mother who had sacrificed so much for him. Focused and driven, he poured his energy into his studies.
DC opened doors Ajay had never dreamed possible—starting with his very first interaction with a computer. He still vividly remembers the pure excitement of seeing a computer for the first time. Through DC’s skill development programs, he mastered MS Office, Photoshop, and essential digital tools. Supported by constant encouragement from the DC team to pursue higher education, Ajay successfully completed his 12th standard and continued pushing forward.
Where He Is Today
Today, Ajay serves as General Manager in the MSME Loan Business at Federal Bank—a position of immense leadership and responsibility.
“When I look back, I know that without Discipleship Centre, I would never have reached this level,” Ajay shares. “DC’s work empowering women, youth, and children through education, computer training, and community support made a real difference in many lives—including mine.”
From a vulnerable child in a challenging environment to a successful corporate leader, Ajay’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, motherly love, and community empowerment.
