For over three decades, Discipleship Centre (DC) has been a cornerstone of the Kalyanpuri community, located in the heart of East Delhi, near Mayur Vihar. Kalyanpuri is a community of resilient people living under immense pressure. Most parents here are daily-wage laborers who work tirelessly just to put one meal on the table. With illiteracy rates high, many parents feel helpless when it comes to their children’s education.

The environment is tough. Many families struggle with the shadow of alcoholism, and for a child growing up here, the streets can offer more danger than opportunity. In an area where life is this difficult, our centre is often the only place a child feels safe, seen, and supported.

Our Centre serves as a vital bridge for families living in the resettlement colonies of Blocks 12 and 18. While the modern skyline of Mayur Vihar rises nearby, we work on the ground to ensure that the children of these blocks have an equal opportunity to reach those heights.

The First Step: Preparing Little Hearts for School

Transformation begins long before the first day of formal school. Many children in our blocks have never experienced a classroom environment. Our School Readiness Program is designed specifically for them:

  • The Basics: We introduce children to their first letters, numbers, and colors, turning curiosity into knowledge.
  • School Behaviour: We teach the “soft skills” of learning: how to sit in a classroom, interact with peers, and follow a routine.
  • Confidence Building: By creating a joyful and structured environment, we remove the fear of “the big school” and replace it with a love for learning.

A Sanctuary of Learning: The Double-Shift Model

In the busy streets of East Delhi, our Centre is a calm space where over 100 children find their path. We operate in two shifts to support the local government school timings:

  • Morning Foundation: For boys who attend school in the afternoon, we provide a morning head-start.
  • Afternoon Empowerment: For girls returning from their morning school, we offer a safe place for remedial classes and syllabus support.
  • The Mainstreaming Mission: We are a second chance for drop-out children. Through intensive Non-Formal Education, we bring them up to speed and help them re-enter mainstream schools.

The true proof of our 30-year journey in Kalyanpuri is our Alumni. Children who once sat on our mats are now leading dignified, professional lives:

We believe that to save a child, you must support the village. Hand-in-hand with Area Counsellors, we provide:

  • Vocational & Skill Training: We partner with organizations to get our youth enrolled in professional courses so they can start earning.
  • Maternal Care: Training for pregnant and lactating mothers on hygiene, food, and nutrition.
  • Health Outreach: Life-saving Medical, Eye, and Cancer Screening Camps held right here in the community.

  • The Children’s Mela: A special day where children run their own food and game corners, learning entrepreneurship and the joy of community service.
